Painless Root Canal

Our teeth are meant to last a lifetime. But sometimes, damage occurs to a tooth, often from an injury causing a tooth to crack or a deep cavity. This can lead to the inside of the tooth becoming infected.

If not treated, the damaged pulp can lead to infection that could harm the bone around the tooth, causing pain and swelling. If the damaged tooth becomes infected, we can perform root canal treatment, also known as Endodontics. The purpose of this treatment is to eliminate the pain caused by inflammation inside teeth to save the tooth and prevent its extraction.

What happens when the root canal becomes infected?

The most common causes that require endodontic treatment of a tooth are trauma, fractures and deep cavities. This is why delaying a check-up may increase the risk of dental inflammation.

Signs & Symptoms:

If your root canal becomes infected, there might not be pain at the beginning. However, as the infection develops, you may start to feel pain and if the infection isn’t treated, it could cause an abscess. This in turn could lead to tooth extraction. Therefore, it’s important to have root canal treatment before further damage takes place.

‘Root Canal’ treatment procedure:

A ‘root canal’ is the term that refers to the natural cavity or space within the center of the tooth. It is made up of the pulp chamber which provides nutrients and nerves to each tooth and the ‘canals’ that connect to each other or to the surface of the root of the tooth. During a root canal, the tooth is opened and the pulp removed. Biocompatible cement is used to fill the tooth before it is restored with a crown or other restoration.

You may need a root canal if tooth decay or a broken tooth has allowed the pulp to become infected and inflamed. Signs and symptoms to watch out for include temperature sensitivity, swelling, drainage, odor, pain, and discoloration of the tooth. It is important to treat infections quickly, as delaying treatment can result in severe tooth pain and abscess.

The treatment involves:

Root canal treatment doesn’t cause pain. It saves your natural teeth, in place of extracting the teeth. Root canal treatment can be completed in two or three appointments, depending on patient’s severity of tooth cavity.
